Placement Tests

All new students will take several examinations. The first will be the English Proficiency Examination. As students’ progress and other subjects are added, students will take additional proficiency examinations. This is to determine their levels of proficiency in these subjects. Based on the results of the English examination, students will be placed into Levels 1 to 4 of English as well as the appropriate Mathematics and/or IT classes.

If their marks are high enough, students can also test out of the Foundation Program altogether. Such students will start academic classes on a full-time basis without entering Foundation.

Guidelines for Math and IT Placement Tests

The Math and IT placement tests at MCBS are designed to assess students' proficiency and place them at the appropriate course level within the foundation program. These tests are also used for already enrolled students who seek exemption from taking IT and Math courses based on their performance. The following guidelines outline the number of attempts allowed, eligibility criteria, booking procedures, and payment requirements to ensure a fair and standardized placement process.
  • Students are allowed a maximum of three attempts per course (Math and IT) during their foundation program.
  • The first attempt is free, but each additional attempt costs RO 20.
  • If a student takes the placement test upon joining the college, that attempt counts as their first attempt.
  • Students can take the placement test once per semester, before it begins.
  • Students currently enrolled in MATH 10, MATH 20/MATH 21, or COSC 10 are not eligible to book the placement test until their final grades are released.
  • Repeating students (e.g., those retaking MATH 10, MATH 20/MATH 21, or COSC 10) may be eligible to take the placement test, but only if they have not used all three attempts.
  • Students who have already used all three attempts must complete the course and are no longer eligible for the placement test.

Students will receive an email from the Registration Department with available test dates and booking instructions. It is important to check your email regularly to stay updated.
Important Notes:

  • Students must book their placement test at least one day in advance.
  • Booking a date does not guarantee permission to take the test. The Registration Team will first verify whether the student has used all three attempts.
  • Students will be informed after verification whether they are eligible to take the exam.
Payment for the second and third attempts (RO 20 per attempt) must be made at the Accounts Department before booking.
  • In exceptional cases, special consideration may be granted by the CEAP Director, depending on individual circumstances.
  • Requests for exceptions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, ensuring fairness and consistency.

Placement Test Instruction:

  • Students should be at the placement test venue at least 15 minutes before the test.
  • Students must bring the payment receipt on the placement test day.
  • Students Must provide “Civil ID” to be able to sit for the placement test.
