Open Educational Resources (OERs)

This guide outlines how to effectively use textbooks, handouts, slides, and other materials that are available under Creative Commons licenses. It is designed to help faculty at MCBS understand which resources can be used in the classroom, added to the LMS, or shared with students while respecting the conditions of each license.

1. Overview of Creative Commons Licenses

At MCBS, we encourage the use of resources licensed under one of the following six Creative Commons licenses:

  • CC BY (Attribution): Allows you to use, modify, and share the material, provided you give appropriate credit to the creator.

  • CC BY-SA (Attribution-ShareAlike): You can use, modify, and share the material, but any derivative works must be licensed under identical terms.

  • CC BY-ND (Attribution-NoDerivs): You can share the material as long as it remains unchanged, and you credit the creator.

  • CC BY-NC (Attribution-NonCommercial): Use, modify, and share the material freely for non-commercial purposes, with proper attribution.

  • CC BY-NC-SA (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike): You can use, modify, and share the material for non-commercial purposes, but derivative works must carry the same license.

  • CC BY-NC-ND (Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs): You can share the material for non-commercial purposes, but it cannot be modified, and proper credit must be given.

2. Using Resources in Classrooms

When using Creative Commons resources in lectures or other face-to-face teaching at MCBS:

  • All resources are available for use, but you must always credit the creator.

  • Modifications can be made for resources licensed under CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-NC, and CC BY-NC-SA.

  • For resources under CC BY-ND or CC BY-NC-ND, you must use them without making changes.

3. Incorporating Resources into the LMS

For materials to be uploaded and shared via MCBS’s Learning Management System (LMS):

  • You can use, modify, and upload resources under CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-NC, and CC BY-NC-SA.

  • Materials licensed under CC BY-ND or CC BY-NC-ND should be uploaded in their original form without modifications.

  • Always ensure proper attribution is visible on the LMS platform, either within the resource description or as part of the file.

4. Sharing Resources with Students

When distributing Creative Commons materials to students, either digitally or in print:

  • You can freely share resources under CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-NC, and CC BY-NC-SA, and you can also modify them as long as the appropriate attribution is provided.

  • CC BY-ND and CC BY-NC-ND materials can be shared, but only in their original form, with proper credit to the creator.

  • Ensure that students are aware of the licensing terms if they plan to further share or distribute the material.

5. Modifying Resources for Teaching

Faculty members at MCBS can modify resources for teaching purposes when using materials licensed under:

  • CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-NC, and CC BY-NC-SA, provided you respect the license conditions (e.g., retaining non-commercial status, sharing derivatives under the same terms).

  • Materials licensed under CC BY-ND or CC BY-NC-ND must remain unmodified.

6. Attribution Requirements

Proper attribution is essential for all Creative Commons licenses. When using or sharing resources, please include:

  • The title of the resource.

  • The name of the author or creator.

  • A link to the license.

  • Any changes you made to the resource (if the license allows for modification).
