MCBS and the SDGs

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. To align with this global initiative, the Modern College of Business and Science (MCBS) hosted an enlightening workshop titled “MCBS and the SDGs: Jumpstarting Actions for Sustainability,” presented by Ms. Aleksandra Minic and Dr. Muna Al Mukhaini. This event, as part of the KSI series for faculty, aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of the SDGs and empowering faculty members to drive sustainable practices within their academic and personal spheres.

The workshop kicked off with an introduction by Ms. Aleksandra Minic, who provided an overview of the 17 SDGs and their significance. She emphasized the interconnectedness of these goals, highlighting how progress in one area can catalyze improvements in others. Ms. Minic explained the urgent need for collective action and the pivotal role that educational institutions like MCBS play in advancing sustainable development.

Dr. Muna Al Mukhaini followed with a detailed presentation on the specific ways in which MCBS is integrating the SDGs into its curriculum, research, and campus operations. She showcased various initiatives that the college has undertaken to promote sustainability, such as reducing carbon footprints, enhancing energy efficiency, and supporting community-based projects. Dr. Mukhaini underscored the importance of embedding sustainability into the core values and mission of the institution.

The workshop also included interactive sessions where participants were divided into small groups to discuss and brainstorm ideas on how they could contribute to achieving the SDGs within their respective departments. These discussions were guided by case studies and best practices from other institutions, providing participants with concrete examples of successful sustainability initiatives. The collaborative atmosphere encouraged faculty members to share their insights, challenges, and potential solutions, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility.

Ms. Minic and Dr. Mukhaini introduced various tools and frameworks that can help faculty members integrate the SDGs into their teaching and research. They highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and partnerships, stressing that sustainability challenges are complex and require diverse perspectives and expertise. Participants were encouraged to develop innovative projects and collaborations that align with the SDGs, thereby contributing to the global effort towards sustainability.

Throughout the workshop, the presenters emphasized the role of education in shaping the leaders and change-makers of tomorrow. They highlighted the need for a holistic approach to education that not only imparts knowledge but also instills values of social responsibility and environmental stewardship. By equipping students with the skills and mindset needed to address sustainability challenges, educational institutions can play a crucial role in driving positive change.

The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to seek further clarification and discuss specific aspects of their sustainability efforts. The feedback from the attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their appreciation for the valuable insights and practical guidance provided by Ms. Minic and Dr. Mukhaini. The knowledge gained from this workshop will undoubtedly enhance the capacity of MCBS faculty to contribute to sustainable development in meaningful ways.

As part of its commitment to continuous learning and improvement, MCBS will continue to host workshops and training sessions aimed at promoting sustainability and other critical issues. The “MCBS and the SDGs: Jumpstarting Actions for Sustainability” workshop stands as a testament to the college’s dedication to fostering a sustainable future for all.
